While Data Mining and Machine Learning Essentials makes several valuable points about machine learning, I found some aspects problematic. The author's treatment of machine learning seems oversimplified, particularly when compared to machine learning. The book is divided into 8 sections, each building thoughtfully on the last. Part 3's discussion of machine learning is particularly strong, with clear examples and practical applications.
