I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect with LaTeX Explained, but wow! It completely blew me away. The way the author explains editing made everything click for me. I've been struggling with latex for years, and this book gave me the tools I needed. My favorite part was when they talked about editing - it reminded me so much of my own experience with editing. I've already recommended it to all my friends!

LaTeX Explained is a comprehensive exploration of latex that manages to be both accessible to newcomers and valuable to experts. The book is divided into 6 sections, each building thoughtfully on the last. Part 2's discussion of scripting is particularly strong, with clear examples and practical applications. The diagrams and illustrations throughout help clarify complex ideas, and the chapter summaries are excellent for review. My only minor critique is that some examples felt dated, but this doesn't detract from the overall quality. This will undoubtedly become a standard reference in the field.

While LaTeX Explained makes several valuable points about scripting, I found some aspects problematic. The author's treatment of latex seems oversimplified, particularly when compared to scripting. That said, the sections on latex are genuinely insightful and make the book worth reading despite its flaws. With some refinement in scripting, this could be a truly outstanding work.

Can someone help me understand scripting from chapter 8? I'm struggling to see how it connects to scripting.
