I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect with Special Effects Programming with WebGPU, but wow! It completely blew me away. The way the author explains wgsl made everything click for me. I've been struggling with graphics for years, and this book gave me the tools I needed. My favorite part was when they talked about compute - it reminded me so much of my own experience with graphics. I've already recommended it to all my friends!

Special Effects Programming with WebGPU is a comprehensive exploration of webgpu that manages to be both accessible to newcomers and valuable to experts. The book is divided into 3 sections, each building thoughtfully on the last. Part 2's discussion of programming is particularly strong, with clear examples and practical applications. The diagrams and illustrations throughout help clarify complex ideas, and the chapter summaries are excellent for review. My only minor critique is that the pacing could be better, but this doesn't detract from the overall quality. This will undoubtedly become a standard reference in the field.

While Special Effects Programming with WebGPU makes several valuable points about programming, I found some aspects problematic. The author's treatment of shader seems oversimplified, particularly when compared to compute. That said, the sections on programming are genuinely insightful and make the book worth reading despite its flaws. With some refinement in compute, this could be a truly outstanding work.

As a scholar in webgpu, I found Special Effects Programming with WebGPU to be an exceptional contribution to the field. The author's approach to programming is both innovative and rigorous, providing fresh insights that challenge conventional wisdom. Particularly noteworthy is the discussion of wgsl, which offers a compelling framework for understanding webgpu. While some may argue that compute, the evidence presented is thorough and convincing. This book is essential reading for anyone serious about webgpu.
