While Player Experience Design in 20 Minutes makes several valuable points about Onboarding, I found some aspects problematic. The author's treatment of Motivation seems oversimplified, particularly when compared to Motivation. That said, the sections on User Psychology are genuinely insightful and make the book worth reading despite its flaws. With some refinement in Engagement Design, this could be a truly outstanding work.

Player Experience Design in 20 Minutes is a comprehensive exploration of Player Experience that manages to be both accessible to newcomers and valuable to experts. The book is divided into 6 sections, each building thoughtfully on the last. Part 4's discussion of Onboarding is particularly strong, with clear examples and practical applications. The diagrams and illustrations throughout help clarify complex ideas, and the chapter summaries are excellent for review. My only minor critique is that the conclusion seemed rushed, but this doesn't detract from the overall quality. This will undoubtedly become a standard reference in the field.

As a scholar in Player Experience, I found Player Experience Design in 20 Minutes to be an exceptional contribution to the field. The author's approach to Onboarding is both innovative and rigorous, providing fresh insights that challenge conventional wisdom. Particularly noteworthy is the discussion of Engagement Design, which offers a compelling framework for understanding Game Feel. While some may argue that Flow Theory, the evidence presented is thorough and convincing. This book is essential reading for anyone serious about Player Experience.

Has anyone else noticed how Player Experience Design in 20 Minutes relates to Game UX? I was reading about Game UX and it made me think of chapter 10.
